  The diode may be limiting the output from the PS to only 3-5A, instead of 15A that the PS can provide. So, I would recommend that you should try a bigger 15 amp diode, instead, or one that matches the output levels of your PS.

The diode will not limit current from the PSU. If the load demands 15A then a 3-5A diode will be overrated and burn-out.

Talking about replications I was tipped on something in Ruslan videos which relates to the grenade coil output in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZrB3pCRu8s#t=502
Ruslan was charging output caps (around 1uF) with up to 1000V from grenade then taking out power with impulse step-down inverter (~15kHz) to the load over ferrite ring, diode bridge and output caps.In short, the inverter just like in Don Smith circuit. :)
I think this is next step for ongoing experiments when you have instant charging caps on the grenade output...

Thanks for bringing this again. Do you know anything more of his inverter? I have seen a drawing which presents a pulse train with intervals of lower frequency. His transformer is of 300T 0.75mm wire, and 50T secondary. I suspect that he tunes his secondary to the low frequency intervals as I have done this before while experimenting with D.Smith.

Do you have the schematic  to the setup in the video  .. it is  good to have  "a" result  because from there on you can optimize  things ( results ) i guess.
