Mags, it's this last part I don't quite understand. Does the flux expand around the toroid, or cut across the empty hole in the middle to the other side?

Yes.  Just like the U shape core example, if we gradually increase current, the fields will expand outward toward the opening of the U. So the same should be for the toroid core or any closed core.

Makes a lot of sense.

Run a single wire through the hole of the core, exactly in the middle of the hole and it will be induced by the primary.

In other words: Two Opposing Magnetic Fields in the Same space, create a High Stress Area where nearly NO Magnetic Field exists!!!

We know this to be true from Winding a Bifilar Coil, Ends Connected in non inductive mode and putting a DC Current through it, next to No Magnetic Field.
