A really good source of information is:

book ........Patent It Yourself

author.......David Pressman

publisher...Nolo Press 

Pressman used to be a patent examiner and is presently a patent attorney. The book is a big one and is updated every year I think; be sure to ask for the most recent edition. You will pay about 50 dollars U.S. but you get a great amount of excellent information about every phase of inventing and patenting.
