Below is a video clip on how to make a very simple circuit that powers a 12 volt pancake coil.
Can someone illustrate how to get rid of that power robbing resistor and make the same circuit more efficient?

All help appreciated

Your idea that the resistor is a power robbing device is misguided.  Is the throttle on a car a power robbing device?  That resistor is there to limit the current going to the base of the transistor to keep the transistor from burning up.  So just like the throttle on a car it has a reason for being there.  And as was explained to you on another forum there is no reason to use such large wattage resistors.  A single 1/2 watt resistor of the correct resistance will allow that circuit to work just fine.
