Hi,
I am wondering if anybody has built the Don Smith quick mockup circuit as described in the Smith pdf.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3vr6qmOwLw&feature=youtu.be
It seems pretty simple even for a beginner like myself. Although I am not sure how the two neon lamps (spark gaps) work together. I assume when the capacitor has been pumped up to the break down voltage of the 2nd neon, the neon fires and the capacitor goes into resonance with the coil. Where does the 1st neon come into play? It must fire before the second one in order to charge the capacitor.
I should add Patrick Kelly has stated that he had to reverse one of the diodes to get the circuit to work. Either diode doesn't make any difference.

Hi Mr. Tomoid I don't wish to be rude or dis respectful BUT you're not expecting that circuit to work as it is are you? ;)

It won't work as it is for quite a few good reasons If you care to correct a good many of your deliberate mistakes we could chat about it if you become serious. ;)

The first question would have you got the exact same device D Smith was using it was a 2 phase device with an earth or zero voltage connection, yours does not have one'

You also need to read his articles on the subject else where in this data base and on the internet.

Hi AlienGrey,
A couple of things: 1) It's not a Don device but the youtubers take on Dons "Transmitter/multiple receivers" design.
                              2) The schematic is lifted as is from the Smith.pdf
                              3)  One of the diode strings has to be reversed. I'm thinking even removed although the video plainly shows 2 diode
                                    strings.

AlienGrey

Yes ;)

1'.  the 1n4007 1000v 'is its peek' 1000volt max each one, you might also need a string of them 4 or 5 but again you need to change them for UF 4007 or they will become short circuit you need Ultra fast devices. the same with the lower one if you leave it in the circuit but the other way round, the cap would be your charge pump timing cap unless the neon is your oscillator timing circuit pulse dump into the inductor. In the circuit you show the neon needs to be on the other side between cap and coil.

Have fun but that circuit is lethal!

Have you thought about using a lower voltage with an oscillator and perhaps an SCR device to dump the capacitor charge into inductor coil just to get you going ?  just a thought.

It is dangerous but so is a mobile isolation transformer. One hand at all times.
