A heat pump moves by mechanical work from. place A to place B an heat volume, termed f.e. in BTU

We have to spent 1 unit energy to move in average 2,5 units energy.( by conventional air-air heat pumps)
But because this 1 work unit is often electric we have to spend 1,8- 3 units( sources-mix- dependent)   primary energy to move  in average 2,5 units
Take two boxes : one side cold and one side warm. : middle temperature  ? total kcal value. ?

Take two boxes: one -/one +  and connect them with passive heat-exchanger : middle temperature ? total kcal value ?

Take two boxes : one-/one + and connect them with a thermodynamic Carnot cycle equipment:       

           you have to invest work energy units for this now active/forced process
YOU change the two boxes  ,now system,middle temperature energetic

And by the above calcuation : 2,5 units + 1,8-3 units= 4,3-5,5  units are the energetic invest for 2,5 units movement

If we use an air condition style compressed gas system


There are other ways.
Solar radiation can operate fluid-based heat pumps
There are also peltier/seebeck thermoelectric generators
which act as a heat pump between two places
and generate energy while doing it.


not that I'm saying it would be an efficient use of a TEG
But that such things are possible, to utilize the excess heat
of ambient sources to heat our homes.
And by the same utility, our hot homes can be cooled by less hot
ambient sources.
