Giver a bit...It dosent have to be for hours...giver a half hour watch temps...then slowly add some koh/lye...watch the amps..study your cell. What changes are taking place with the water / with the cell / with the plates.....?

It is quite noticable.

@ Bouzouki - Mega ditto's on your tubular cell.

@Hkyle - How long should I let this thing charge before I can consider adding KOH?
It?s easier to be forgiven than it is to get permission....

hi there ZFF,
If you are interested in alighning the fields in yer cells this is wat you can do,since yer voltage is under 14v you can take the first plate and make it negative or possitive, add 5 nuetral plates, then make an opossitive polarity plate from the first, instead of make'n the next plate s.s. use an acrylic plate in the next slot, then the next s.s. plate will be the opposit of the last power plate you made and then add another 5 nuetral plates with another power plate on then end of those....you may need to change the amount of neutral plates according to how many slots ya have in there but you can see the pattern. If you do that way the fields will line up and couple properly. You will see the field start from the negative side all the way thru the acrylic to the end of yer cell stack to to the anode side. The anode pulls that way.It may be to problamatic to try and compare but just thought i'd throw that at ya in case you wanna try it.

Okay. I was out chaperoning tonight. Left it on my bench at 13.5v for 8 hours. Very tiny gas production. 2.2mA steady brought it up to 48v with a variac, full wave bridge and filtered with an electrolytic cap. 10mA. Whoopeee! Slowly mixed in about 1/10 tsp of sodium bicarb to bring mA up to about 200 mA and let it run for a bit. Definitely saw some gas production. It was uneven but the same on both sides. My plates are numbered. Negative plate is zero. Working out in both directions is 1 through 9 (pos) sides A & B.

Between plates 8 & 9 became cloudy with microscopic bubbles (presumably H2) and some foamy looking scum.
Between plates 7 & 8 same.
Between all other plates 0 - 7 some larger bubbles.

Probed each pair of adjacent plates and here's what I measured on side B:

0/1 = 3.6v
1/2 = 3.8v
2/3 = 3.9v
3/4 = 4.2v
4/5 = 4.6v
5/6 = 5.5v
6/7 = 6.3v
7/8 = 8.5v
8/9 = 8.0v

Similar voltage spread on side A. This brings me back to a previous question about precharging the plates one by one with one terminal fixed to the positive and working toward the center down the stack. Plates that started with the greatest voltage potential across them produce more H2. Would it not be best to precharge each pair of adjacent plates one by one with the 12v before starting?

Later ramped it up to 96v and shot this video. http://youtube.com/watch?v=ePn2wSIAt4o

Seems like the electric fields are confused and are have'n a fight..with 48 volts on 9 cells each cell shuld read 5.3 volts. The fight ther have'n useally can be won by the way mentioned earlier or change the number of nuetral plates. There may be other ways to get it streightened out Im not familar with.Interesting project ya got and good job on the videos. 8)

of course the easiest way tho with the power supply you have is just to connect t o the end plates.

@ZFF
Have you tried to "rough up" the plates on both sides with vertical scratches
or do they still have the brushed finish on them?
