Strange sparks when DC or AC is applied through a magnet stack...

Hi All,
John Aarons,
who is currently doing the hydrogentap.com
project to build an efficient electrolyizer just
saw some strange effects, when he applied AC or DC
current through a stack of permanent magnets.

First when he used DC, the magnet stack conducted
the DC current.

But when he switched the polarity he then never could
get any current to conduct again..

Have a look at his 2 latest videos:

Stephan, check out the similarities between these two videos... I posted this last night... in Ironhead's thread.

Successfully Perpetually Failing at everything I do...

hartiberlin

Hi All,
I just tried the same setup with a stack of smaller neodym magnets
and by using my car battery charger, which puts out a pulsating
6 or 12 setting DC Volts chopped full wave rectified 50 Hz wave,so it is
100 Hz pulsed DC at around 8  or  14 Volts DC peak to peak from
ground to maximum voltage level.

When I applied first the 8 Volts settings, the magnets conducted,
but suddenly they stopped conducting.
That was strange.
But I did not see any sparks with my eyes...

Then I pulled off every single magnet and
I could see, that on one magnet the Nickel coating
has come off and this was it, that the whole magnet stack did
not conduct anymore !

It was not visible, when the
stack was still complete, but only, if you removed this
faulty burned off coating magnet and then the stack also
conducted again !

Also I tried it with bigger neodym magnets and they still conduct
in all directions...
Also I can not see any sparks there...

But I remember that SGIHunter said, that these strange
sparks can only be seen through a videocamera, so they are probably
in the near infrared spectrum, which is not directly
visible with the naked eye...

So I guess this effect, that the magnets did not conduct anymore
is just related to a broken nickel coating with the center magnet
from John Aarons.

At least these "infrared sparks" are very strange and need another deeper
research...

Stefan,

That's what I was assuming about the plating.  It looked to me like his middle magnet was showing signs on the plating of detioration.  It also does not make sense that the current wouldn't travel through the plating.  My guess is the sparks are "spark gaps" in the plating.  Has anyone done this with ferrite or other magnets with no plating and seen any strange effects?  It was curious though that the magnet showing the effects was the one in the middle.  I wonder if the plating showed any signs of "wear" before he did the experiments?

Hi Daniel,
my battery charger can deliver around 10 amps and
at around 14 Volts this is more than 140 Watts.
This power just heats the nickel coating and burns
it away, cause the nickel coating is very thin.
I did not see the burned away coating, when the stack
was still there, but only, when I removed every single magnet
from it and one magnet had a loose coating then , which
did not make electrical contact anymore...

After removing this "bad" magnet the stack conducted again.
