I believe that the kind of power cells that the Lunar rovers had, were based on this kind of phenomenon.

Beta Voltaics has been around for a long time, as so do Gadolinium Solar cells, but the problem was they were ultra expensive, only NASA could afford them. The trick was making them commercial.
