It's called a phased array antenna, it's usually flat, steered electronically.

Phased arrays are very neat, quite a challenge to do for the DIY'ers though :-)
Beam forming on the other hand, in its simplest state, can be done with stacked antennas quite simply.

  I think it would be interesting to test an small orbiting power
station in orbit on mars.

Why?

I've noticed from those mars rover pictures that the terrain on mars is very flat on the surface. Because of the wind
erosion and no water erosion there are very few cross cut gullies on mars. This would make it possible for a rover to travel at high speeds
over the surface using computer imaging. The only exception is meteor craters which would be avoidable ahead of time.

Are you thinking of a rover which speeds around the planet surface following the light?
How fast would a rover need to travel - on earth it would be incredibly quick but I don't know about Mars!

It would allow a
robotic spacecraft to visit interesting sites all over mars. Such a rover would need a lot of electricity at times. It could be a metal box
that might flip over on it's wheels and continue to operate normally. Two stable states I think they call it. The power station could then be
repurposed for a manned mars mission.

What power station did you have in mind?

This reminds me of something I saw last night.
I was out with the dogs and caught this large glowing red object off to my left moving fairly fast at about 800 feet up.
At first I thought it was flaming jet engines, but I was looking at the side of it from the direction of travel and there was no sound.
It was red like a large LED but slightly brighter in two spots which is why I thought I was looking at the exhaust of some jet engines.
It continued heading north in a straight line without change or sound until it disappeared possibly in clouds near the horizon.
There were no wing lights or strobe lights, only the strange red glow with no sound.

Maybe it was a test of something new?

How much stock can you put in the Orion cube. Not much right? They seem to set up a program so later they can pick up and run with something in the news, they already have the scrpt written ahead of time. A cube that would allow someone to look into the future would lead them a stray so fast. One thing they are afraid to admit is alternate time lines. In the past we have one timeline. In the future we have at least a dozen right now. Sure they talk about universes and dimensions but, look up alternate time lines, they could be the major factor in the creation of universes.

J-ROD probably did exist. 15 light years from here certainly limits were he came from.

The question is, is there a war going on in space. A russian satellite made it home and a triangle was reported shot down over Colorado. That is the international buzz right now. Are Russia, China, and, the US fighting right now, or are we fighting something else?

Did we go to the moon? Sure we did. Once we get a foot hold we never leave. Did they ever show us a real picture of the moon landings?  The military is up there, maybe secret military. Nothing constructive will come of that. Real Earth changing weapons are up there. Have you heard of God Rods? Now let me point out to you that lifting huge heavy element rods into space kind of negates the idea that an experiment is to heavy to send up there. Is the Pentagon on the move to keep people from finding out the facts? If everything is controlled by a one world government they can keep everyone out of space indefinitely.

They are afraid of every game changer. The common person could care less. Everything that is good for the people is banned in the US. I suspect most of NATO as well. 300 MPG VW is banned. The doctors and big Pharma want a weight loss medicine banned because it works. Come up with a cancer cure, they have a cell waiting for you. There are people sitting in cells right now for energy and medical innovations that would make your lives better. God knows what else will land you in the slammer like a propulsion system.

What makes Mars so attractive as a destination? The most striking thing is the 24 and 1/2 hour day. Fix it up and we can farm there.

They lie on top of lie, what is Venus really like? The atmosphere is 80% reflective, Venus could be a snow covered planet.

FEMA has been very active in my area right now. All these government agencies are plugged into each other. The NAVY was caught hacking into computers and handing the illegal search and seizures over to civilian law.

If there is a war in space the Pentagon is behind it. We have complete spectral analysis of the Earth, Moon, and Mars. They know where everything is and want to control it.
