If you have a good enough idea, why not begin by upgrading hybrids in your local area.  People would love to take their existing auto and have it retrofitted with the latest innovations.  The muscle car era is a typical example of this.  Some auto shops made a pretty penny doing these retrofits for customers. 

If your idea is worth its salt, you're going to get a buyout offer.  The competition is fierce in the industrial world and anything that will give a company the edge will be snatched up.  You have to unveil your product.  It can't remain a top secret and make money unless it is so dam good that it threatens the oil companies.  They will pay you anything to get it off the market.  Don't worry, they'll even provide the necessary mud slinging so that we all forget about you and your invention.  The question is:  Are you for sale?  Don't feel bad, most of us have a price.  I don't fault you either.  Its the oil companies I fault for taking great innovations and thrashing them for their own interest. 

Hey guess who's bailing out the auto industry?  The energy commission will be aiding the auto industry with 5 billion dollars.  It was just announced today.  Thats partnership at its best.
