Belt Magnet Motor

Hi everyone,

I thought I'd start a thread over here that illustrates an idea that was developed over on CLaNZeR's site (www.overunity.org) on a thread started back in March by user "dannybuntu" called "Hello Clanzer and Everyone".

This discussion concerned an idea for a belt magnet motor, and the contributors were myself, gwhy! and sm0ky2. Hopefully CLaNZeR will bring his site back online again soon and the thread will be visible once more, but in the meantime I thought I should put the idea here also, (just in case CLaNZeR has taken the site down permanently) since myself and gwhy! have been working at building a model that seems (on the face of it) to be quite promising.

Ordinarily I would just assume that the site was temporarily in maintenance mode, but CLaNZeR appears to have deleted his YouTube account also, which seems a bit out of the ordinary. CLaNZeR has always been open with ideas and to suddenly drop the YouTube account makes me wonder if he's had enough of the (public) game. Hopefully not, he's a valued member of the OU think tank.

I'll post the general gist of the idea and the photo's that I'd put up on the previous thread.
(@gwhy! if you're reading this then maybe you want to post the pictures you had up there too).

So here is the idea...

Basically, the objective is to take advantage of the inert zone that I first noticed in Graham Clarkes' Triforce array. The method employed was to have the triforce "roller" magnet attached to a belt. When the belt magnet moves through to the end of the array it is lifted above the the array and looped back.

The method of propulsion is not limited to a triforce array, there are of course many other arrangements that can push a bar magnet, and the inert zone can easily be recreated using shielding or a steal ball arrangement as in the triforce. Shielding is placed between the bottom belt magnets and the top belt magnets (which would be traveling in the opposite direction) to block any interference on these top magnets from the magnet array. A magnet array is also placed at the top of the device to act on the top belt magnets in the opposite direction.

My first attempts to build this with weak magnets were disappointing. Although it seemed as though the belt magnets wish to move, the friction of the components was way to great. Since then I have been experimenting with magnets of greater strength and better bearings, but I have problems with these twisting the belt.

Hopefully these will be ironed out soon but as is always the case I don't have enough time to play with this idea as much as I want to. You know what it's like - work, family, never ending home chores etc. etc. I keep picking it up whenever I get the chance though.

Thats the basic idea anyway.

On another note, I hope CLaNZeR hasn't "left the building", shame if that's the case.

Interesting, i remember seeing this video on youtube not to far in the past with this v gate setup but was not in a wheel it was flat and there was one vgate after another made up of several small neo magnets and the stator he pulls back and lets go and it travelles accross the table passing thru all six or so vgates in attraction mode, ive always thought that ideo would work with a belt setup.

gwhy!

Hi klicUK,
I have uploaded a video on youtube of what I have tried with this setup and now I have come to a halt with my playing with this setup for now  :( because I need twice as many mags to make the belt that I would like to try next. I hope the video will help you in your setups as it raised even more questions for me. I still think there is something in this setup.

Have a look at the vid and let me know what you think.

Linking the belt mags together the way that I did was really good and didn't suffer from twisting at all not when i made it 24mm wide.

@gwhy!,

nice vid m8. seems like you put in a lot of work making that belt. I like the rolling "tank track" idea.

I've got tons of chores to do around the house, so I can't spend as much time working on my device as I'd like, but I will post a vid as soon as I have the chance.

Good job

gwhy!

Has any one got any thoughts or suggestions as to why this setup will/will not work as a gravmag wheel ? using a standard setup for the trigate array.

Feedback please  :)
