One simple way and the first step used by Tesla was to use multiple spark gap in series. Silent spark was there, but how I'm not sure.
My theory is this : series spark gap is like a few resistors in series = higher resistance. When air is not ionized the current flowed through each spark gap is lower then if there would be one bigger spark gap, then when spark goes through the last spark gap there is low resistance ionized plasma and the huge power can be passed silently...
I assumed that sound is the loose of energy due to abrupt ionization,I may be wrong.
Then Tesla found the brilliant idea of using rotary interrupter when the gap is VARIABLE, and ideally placed in good insulating oil. Try to draw conclusions, please....

I am using a rotary interrupter. Relays and reed switches wear out whereas you can change the brushes in the rotary easily.
Also you can configure the rotary into dis-charge  and re-charge at 180 degrees easily.
In the 1896 patents Tesla gave 4 methods of tuning also.

What can you do to remove the noise in the spark gap,
but the whole strength is still there
and from that point making the energy in the spark gap to be included in the longitudinal wave.
that resulted in a tremendous strong field.

well, we need somebody to replicate what tito said about charging caps and discharging and post it for everyone to see because, the concept is so 'doubting' Then perhaps, this thread will die a glorified death.
