Forest, your remarks about this letter got me searching, and I cam up with this article, which highlights Tesla's letter to friend and publisher Robert Underwood Johnson about his motor which would derive power from the ambient medium.

Tesla maintained that the "secret" for this means of converting power from the ambient medium into useable electricity was outlined in his June 1999 Century Illustrated Magazine article (seems page 200 has the gist of his "secret")

Exactly !    Everytime somebody is doubt about free energy should just read this letter and also all information about Clemente Figuera. That's one side of the story, second one is : Tesla always thought about energy from ambient.

Tesla's earthquake machine uses the principle of the double electric bell.
Two solenoids acting in push-pull sequence. The usual power nowadays is 60 volts AC.
This was used extensively by Telecom companies for telephone bell ringing purposes.
