Once upon a time I did small experiment with microcontroller and mosfet gently driven by a proper mosfet driver....I have a source of 230V AC and I wanted to charge my capacitor from it with diode bridge. Unfortunately my capacitor was only reliable up to 100V.I was lazy to wind proper transformer so I thought that maybe  if I open mosfet for just a short moment then voltage on capacitor would not rise above 100V. I computed RC constant but then rather tried setting first very short time and gradually widen impulse , checking final voltage. I found it funny experiment and fully confirmed my idea, though RC constant was not very helpful (maybe because my tools are not precise).It's so simple ,right ? By this experiment I confirmed that current has inertia.Then immediately a flash of light  brighten up my mind and I recalled how Tesla was able to extract energy at higher rate from alternators by using momentum.The point is he was doing it continously , not just in single pulse.    Was it so simple ? NO! Even for Tesla he took him few years to understand it or rather to find a method to apply understanding.10 years for him to come from simple one wire bulb like our today's CFL lamps to the magnifying transmitter - from 1889 to 1899.

Your tips were much more specific in the past

If there is any secret to this, I would say it would be to look more at what certain devices do and not so much how they are built. Look at the most basic function or properties and don't be distracted by fanciful concepts, OU buzzwords, intricate details or expensive looking devices. Define the path to the goal and break the path down to each step along the way.

One working concept is a group of simplicities. A few simple inexpensive steps in logical order gives a little extra.
Lots of little extras can be combined to make a big extra.

It's as simple as that and you have already been told where to get the little extra.
