Here, it looks like he's feeding the electrical impulses from the motor (acting as generator?) and through the coil, back into the motor with the diode. Notice the cap in parallel with the motor's terminals.
It looks to me like he's harnessing the motor's properties as generator and feeding it back into the motor. It seems the law of conservation of energy would preclude this from happening. However, perhaps the motor's magnet is amplifying things, and perhaps the spike sent back to the motor coils is actually sending the windings into resonance. I gotta try this one.
