Im not sure if a diode would cycle the current back through the load but it should since Q2 disconnects the load from the battery.
Mark would know more about this.

A capacitor would be better it will allow the magnetic field in the trany to oscillate, whereas the diode would just keep building the field.

I'm pretty convinced Tito is using the zener as a defence mechanism to prevent run away.
I don't think it is significant in getting ou.
Tito also recommends using a car voltage regulator as a cheap and ready made alternative.
I think there may be something to Tesla's 3 coil Colorado springs experiment - especially using bifilar coils.

Not to get off subject but a boost converter could deliver very high voltage stress on an hho cell, without current draw through the cell.

Maybe I should have said without electron flow through the cell.
