Many thanks for the info, sadly I have to report a "BIG FAT ZERO" from the Welsh panel of judges regarding the above device. I gave it another shot and rewound my coils with a plastic former this time. And Dear Itsu, I wound it in the right direction!

I am going to give it one more chance by "hitting it" with a Royer oscillator coil and have a poke with the scope. Then Dear Zeitmaschine we can perhaps lay the "Filckering spark" to rest

Your words are wise, this was an interesting side track and I think Hoppy deserves a prize for his almost perfect replication. But he forgot the most important piece of the puzzle....... The little bit of white wire. That's probably why it diddn't work!!

Now taking T-1000's comments about L4 choke.

He is suggesting 1/4 wavelength. Does that mean L4 should have 20 turns? or 320 turns? Bearing in mind that the schematic clearly shows the other 3 coils pictorially at their rough sizes.

No, he is talking about the standing wave wavelength inside that coil, if you treat that coil as a transmission line. 

You can sense an electric field near the coil with a neon screwdriver to see the standing wave and adjust its frequency in such manner that only 1/4 of the wavelength is reflected from its end.

Progress so far on the Сергей В. device. I have "gone large" using 80 turns of 2.5 mm2 in two layers. It is wound on a 50mm dia Aluminium tube with an insulated slit along it's length.

If we play the NMR card then the absolute dimensions and proportions between the coils would be critical.  Yours are a little different.

It is L4 that poses the mystery as it is hidden from view within the main coil.

For NMR there should be ceramic ring magnets inside.

Spark is very strong white and noisy!!

To generate a dense spectrum of frequencies simultaneously, the pulse should be powerful and very short (and repeat at low frequency).

Most spark-gaps don't produce very short discharges, that's why there are many methods for shortening them, such as compressed air and strong magnets.

I think it best at least initially to try to follow the circuit using the transistor flip-flop arrangement even though this is rather crude and as Verpies comments, unnecessary.

Of course it is always better to replicate as closely as possible.

The "transistor flip-flop arrangement" is simple and good for getting high power pulses out of a Transformer but  to get the highest voltage out of it (e.g. to charge a HV capacitor for subsequent strong discharge) the true Flyback Transformer arrangement is better.
