There is no need for gas in a coil to do that - it works in air (would work in vacuum too as it is electrostatic):

  Energy transfer through electrostatic field with receiving coil and/or just plate and unconnected wire. The suggestion here is that the ground wire must be long enough or the effect won't work. Passing any wire through a ferrite core inside the TC produces nice long sparks from the wire.

Regarding the recent photos of the TK device, I had put up those similar photos before @QT busted the bank.

The photo showing the TK coil removed from the device and on the table has the white wire that had to be snipped before it could be removed. If that wire went to the spark gap, why would they have cut it that short? besides, you can see the white is is multi-strand and not suitable for spark gap usage. They would have cut it further away to be able to re-splice it later. Cutting it that short would indicate that it was going straight into the green box and that the available wire length was therefore limited. Hence that short snipped wire.

Also, if that wire went to another wire on the same TK coil, there would have been no reason to snip it.

Also, the green wire from the spark gap takes a sharp left turn so it could be going to the wire coming out of the far end top right or it could also have gone to the outer coil. See image grab below.

In the Green Box video, when TK is talking while he is standing in front of the Green Box, there is the fat guy who had held the TK coil in his hands inside the house. Well this fat guy in the background is with one of TKs helpers and he is poking around the device, tilting it and  then his is putting his hands on both ends of what I think is that green wire from the spark gap and the wire at top right and he was pulling on them to see if they were joined. Then TKs helper points to the two coils and the guys asks him something and the helper responds by shaking his head as if to say "no". Do you think you can figure out what they were talking about. This is about the only place they are really looking between the TK coil and the green box.
