Simply to get enough volume of electrons to move through the circuit.

Here is the part that does the 'work'.

In the original schematic the.
1) first coil around the 'HV coil' simply pumps the tuned circuit.
2) second small coil gets the power out to feed the load.
3) 'HV Formation' circuit makes the enormous power in the tuned circuit visible and available to the 'out side world'.
