Didn't have the identical transformer, used one with two 110 v primaries and one 12 v secondary in revers (and variac).  Note attached JPEG.

Instead of variac try a capacitor. At worse it will explode. :( ::)

Having a fire extinguisher at hand would be a good idea, since TK's worktable looks also a bit burned.

But one thing is for sure: In order to manipulate a 50Hz circuit an electric component is needed that is capable of influencing a 50Hz circuit. Our best candidate for this job so far is the 50Hz transformer in the 2004 video. Because an air coil with a few windings (as shown in front) is not suitable for that and in the tin can there is not much room left for something heavy since a flyback (maybe from old b/w TV) for high voltage generation will take at least half of the available space in that tin can (estimated 13cm diameter and height).

What could happen if the 220V input from the primary coil is connected via a capacitor to the 12V secondary coil in parallel?
