The 12V battery powering the circuit schematic shown will be 'conditioned' through alternate charge and discharge pulses and will increase in capacity as a result of lowering impedance through plate de-sulfation. This effect will plateau at some point, so its important to run the device under load conditions until the internal resistance of the battery stabilises before taking measurements of input v output energy measurements. Monitoring voltage levels can be very misleading with this type of circuit, as the battery voltage may be seen to increase for some considerable time whilst under load, giving the impression of self-running. The true test is to leave the device running until the battery voltage is seen to peak and then drop before reaching any conclusion as to its performance. If the battery terminal voltage level stays constant or increases over a period well in excess of its nominal ampere-hour rating, then this may be cause for excitement.
