As soon as the switch opens the magnetic field generated by the primary coil collapses and creates a high voltage spike in that primary coil. This high voltage spike then is stepped up to even higher voltage in the secondary coil, so the spark gap fires. Since the electrons jumping the spark gap are all flowing from negative to positive some of these electrons can pass the diode so the positive pole of the primary coil is connected (through the spark gap and the diode) to negative. That means the primary coil is not simply switched off but short-circuited for a brief moment when the spark fires.

Not sure, but maybe shorting the primary coil instead of disconnecting it creates a similar effect.

I. Don't know about that primary going all the way down.  But it you cut that out with that other switch, you find the resonant point and maybe you will have something.
