@Grumage, I have looked outside at supply to our village and pole transformer is fed by 3 phase only, no neutral or earth just three live wires come across the fields. Then out of pole transformer one loop goes down pole to ground rod and then with one live wire making up two wires only from transformer pole, then those two wires go on poles , live and combined neutral/earth to houses, then inside house the neutral is earthed anyway to ground rod at meter.

Dear Keith.

You are describing a typical 3 phase HV overhead transmission system. The transformer is wired Delta to Star. Delta at HV and Star at LV. Using this method you can then provide a Neutral and Earth at the Star point for your LV needs.

Where I live there are only 4 properties so we are supplied with a two phase 11 Kv overhead line that then steps down to 240 V direct.

@Grumage,a.king21, please post simple sketch showing what you are suggesting, as a sparks I cannot see how you can intercept either the supply or return to get any electricity out of grid. Even if you use current transformer on either wire ( in fact live, neutral, earth or earth ground) power still reads on supply meter . Unless interception is before pole transformer in which case just blatant stealing.
