I'm merely a theoretical electronics engineer/technician for now, since I have no extra money for experimentation, but I was a professional electronics/computer technician in the past.
As a result, I have a lot of ideas, but no hard test results to back them up---for now.  That could change if I get a job locally in the Bay Area of California.

Between this posting and the Big_M_Ok’s patent postings, I started to look in the garage for some aluminum flashing I bought years ago…I’ll set up a “radiant collector” and see what I can pull from the sky…

First, I cleaned the aluminum flashing with borax (played with “borax battery” voltage)…then hooked up a copper wire to the corner and headed into my attic.  I set up the flashing on its side fish-knifed, sitting on wooden rafters so it would not collect dust.  Had about 14’x1.5’ of aluminum for a good sized collector plate which took too long to put up in that 150 degree attic. Made sure the plate and wire did not come close to any metal along its entire length.

Ran the wire from my attic all the way down to the first level floor and connected it to ground. I didn’t have enough wire to go outside or any farther (~50’ of wire).  Hooked up the voltmeter and got absolutely no volts.   So, I figured 2 things:  1) I have a heavy ceramic earth roof that may be getting in the way and 2) I have some sharp edges on my aluminum flashing that allows bleed off (likely culprit).

“2 birds 1 stone”… I should put a round collector on the roof as my quick little project was taking much longer than anticipated (always).  Since it was now much smaller, I decided to sandwich 2 plates together and cut round corners for a surface area of about 1.5’x1.5’…for the heck of it, I stripped and wound the wire into a pancake coil (for tesla, of course), slid it in between the plates and squirted epoxy around the edge…Took electric tape and taped the entire outer edge but I did not wrap the entire surface (that would be next, if no juice).  I glued some wooden dowels on one side and headed to the roof. Placed it on its side and fed the wire into the attic, using an extra “plastic pen insulator” to keep it perfectly centered, minimizing the wire’s closeness to the metal screen mesh...no induction this time for sure.

Fed the wire inside, down to the lower level avoiding any metal along the way until I was next to ground….set my DMM on VAC, connected one lead to ground, one to the wire and “ding”--I got volts!

Nothing on any DC setting, only AC…

3.5 volts AC and 30 milliamps to be exact…not super high volts, like others, but enough to run a small motor.   Pretty cool!

Then I clicked the Hz on my fluke and was bummed out--59.98Hz

Clearly, I only tapped the power grid and it looks like my experiments for this device at my house are over.  I didn’t see a reason to set-up a bridge rectifier or anything more at this point. I will take this with me the next time I am far from power lines and civilization and report what I find out.  Since this was a bust, I’ll post the 2 most important DMM shots (volts and Hz). Sorry the pics are a bit blurry, they are from my cell phone…

@Tom--I don’t know how you were getting DC mixed in and 120Hz?

I have read some other patents that talk about specifically not using an aluminum collector (ATREE by Dr. Peter Markovich talks about that) but Tesla’s doesn’t say that specifically.  Anything special about your collector plate?  Do you have the opportunity to test your equipment away from power lines?

The bridge rectifier was showing on the frequency meter. So 60hz+60hz=120hz....
Very little dc power coming from the atmosphere

With respect to your Reply #6, I agree you're picking up resonant 60 Hz from the municipal power grid.  When the power blacks out, you need a whole lot more wire/cable to get reasonable power readings.

Now today, I just got lucky enough to find an out-of-the-way-place here in San Francisco to string out a long length of wire and test it for power generation using my little VOM. There are live tree branches to drape the wire on, off the ground about 3-5 feet, as I pay it out.  The ground is hard packed beach sand that's extremely common in S.F.(solid rock under that---usually real deep).  Buildings should be up to 300-400 yards away.

I'll just take a small Radio Shack perf board and then wire a circuit into it for an input connection, a diode, a capacitor and a ground wire for the steel piece I'll use for an earth ground.  I'll try and draw it up in ascii notation later when I have more time on this computer.
