He hasn't stepped up because it's fake.  I have seen these vid's a long while ago and there were some replication attempts.  You can actually find these rods he's using but they are really expensive.

Whats the faking mechanism then?

Its not clear how its a fake.

Sleight of hand.  He has wires running up his arm and into his shirt.

It can be seen in the second vid to have no wires.

If it is indeed a fake; what is more likely is batteries in one or both rods, with connections brought out from one pole of the batt to the fully conducting surfaces and the other pole of the batt going to a hidden wire between them, going down the bottom of the rods and through the plate.
