I don't recall seeing any discussion about putting a coil/collector around a spark gap
and a quick search doesn't find much.

Anyone seriously tried it or have any thoughts on what might occur?

Doesn't Gray use a screen or collector by the spark gap in his tube. I am sure I read somewhere where Tesla also mentioned something about this. It could of been Gray??  I will have to look it up.

IotaYodi

A large subject as there are both ac and dc spark gaps and different ways to utilize them. Two Japanese physicists noted that low voltage has a more intense magnetic field. That coincides with leydens experiments. You can have a low voltage spark gap that doesnt ionize the air making it invisible. From what I understand radiant energy and magnetic fields are the two main interactions on a coil. The magnetic would seem to be better with solid cores.

What I know I know!
Its what I don't know that's a problem!

Good morning
Nikola Tesla also used N/S magnets at his spark gaps to get a more "intense" electrical burst. He also insulted those same magnets to prevent the electricity from destorying the magnets.

Hi,

IotaYodi mentions that it is possible to have a low voltage spark gap that does not ionize the air making it invisible.

This is what I believe is happening in a HHO cell. The air being replaced by water which is in a natural electro magnetic balance of the water molecule.

The process of the very low voltage invisible spark arcing across the plate gap "may" be causing either the hydrogen or oxygen to momentarily flip its magnetic field and the atoms of like charge then repel each other instead of attract, breaking the bond.

We know that the surface of a charged sphere suspended in a non compressible fluid has been observed to momentarily flip its polarity when propelled through the fluid.

I don't know if this information will help you in your coil discussion but I thought I would share it.

(P.S. I too was picturing Nikola cussing his magnets, thanks for the chuckle, cheered me up no end!) :)
