Hi Nick. Not that it really matters too much, but since you are insisting it is a kacher circuit,
can you provide a link or quote where Nelson said he is using a 'kacher' circuit? 
He actually said a few posts back that he was using his own circuit designs, but he didn't
specifically say what circuit type he was using. :) Also, if his circuit has changes from a kacher, then it
wouldn't really be a kacher. There are various types of oscillator circuits and variations that can be
used to drive circuits like these. The Kacher is an easy way to drive Tesla coils, but it is not
necessarily the most efficient way to do it. There are probably more efficient ways to do it.

This one has the characterisic falling audio frequency of an iron-cored transformer based blocking oscillator when loaded. They can run at very low supply voltages and are are basically simple inverters which can be physically tailored to suit a given load. The output is recified and FWBR / cap loaded, which allows high output voltages to be achieved. The whole operation tells me that the liklihood is that the device is running on a fairly low voltage but is drawing a fairly high current. The motor loading is misleading as I have that same MY1016 motor and although the plate says 14A, the unloaded current is less than 1A. There appears to be some sophistication built into the device, to provide the 9V start battery latching circuit and some output switching,

Ok on that Hoppy. I suppose it could be a ferrite core of some sort as well.

Yes indeed but in this case I see a reasonably large transformer capable of running the loads he shows and I think its probably an iron-cored transformer.
