Oh it's more simple than that ! get a relay 12-volt auto relay wire it to self-oscillate at the hot end connect 2 diodes one + and on _ connect the other two ends to a cap DR Stiffler style connect earth to neg end turn off power and short out cap 'bang'. Don't ask me how to make it a self-runner!

It is most likely same what akula was talking about. You let Tesla coil ramp up to the maximum EM field then abruptly chop it back to 0 and collect ions by inertia on the grenade coil as on the capacitor. Same happen with nanosecond pulser but on smaller scale.

P.S> When I was doing the radiation test from the Tesla coil the caps was self charging in same fashion and there was pulse trains going on the Tesla coil. Will continue investigating that on next visit to the lab. This also may appear as one of conditions what cause grenade coil to charge with ions and mix up with electrons.
