Why don't you use some low resistance and non-inductive Current Sensing Resistor (CSR) in series ?
You can connect a voltmeter or better yet, a scope, across such CSR.

Well thanx for at least an acknowledgement.  I had gotten some CSR but they were 0.02Ohm, so the voltage is much too low to detect correctly.  My other low own resistors are only 1/4-1/2 watt, and since overall it's 5 watts I'm sure that's not enough....


the scope points aren't so significant... the probes themselves don't affect the circuit at this stage; there's really only a few points of any sort of interest... (opposite sides of the coil/ the drains of the mosfets... opposite sides of the capacitor... that's all the same points) 


I dunno I'm astonished that air core coils of 24 turns or so are able to interact and transfer power so well...


And I'm not sure which direction to really pursue... 1) chain another oscillator from the power output, but putting a 1000ohm resistor across that capacitor yields 5.8V, or 5.8mA at 80V(without load) is only like .4 watts collected there, so it shouldn't work, at 12V it was drawing 120mA for an initial LED load.... or 2W...


The other idea is to use a tesla transformer, or encourage more resonance.  With my last load configuration, changing the input voltage merely increases the height, and doesn't modify the frequency; not entirely sure why that has stabilized, unless now it's just the resonance of the secondary instead of the primary that's working.


And I realize empirical results aren't very helpful; but by now I think it's worth the effort to make some quantitative measurements... somewhat...
