What could be the reason to connect a thin wire to a thick wire in mid air?

If the thick wire would be a coaxial cable and the thin wire would be connected to the inner conductor of that coaxial cable then this could be a good reason indeed. And if I'm not mistaken then the thin wire is connected to the spark gap (high voltage) on its other end.

I have the same, you can see the unbalance around 5:55 minute in the video.
it must be like Thaelin says, the turn on time is not right which is not surprising when you see the chaotic gate signals in "special mode", see my post #3753 2e picture on the last page.

No idea what to do against it, perhaps like Magpwr suggest, use a PWM to drive the gates on the "special mode" frequency.
I could give that a try.

Dear Itsu and Nick.

This little circuit I have attached worked fairly well with my Akula0083 replication !!  However I would suggest a fixed resistor in the variable chain to stop the drive signal getting too low and blowing the FET's.
