There can be many types of fusion reaction that liberate excess energy. Funded by the American Department of Defence, and later on, the Navy, Dr. Bussard led a team of researchers to provide one safe workable alternative.  It uses inertial electrostatic confinement to induce collisions between protons and boron-11 to produce helium and copious amounts of excess energy. The results were made public around October 2006. All that is needed now is a heavyweight investor to foot the development cost.
