Hi All,

New member, been reading since the OCAL Whipmag thing started.

Congratulations and my admiration for anyone doing replications of AL's device.

Hopefully if/when we get working replications it will take some of the pressure of OC and AL.

Everyone over at the Steorn forum has a pet theory and/or test that they would like to see done, So I'd like to open this thread up as a place for replicators to state what tests they are planning, what they are trying to test for etc...In an effort to make efficient use of everyone's time and not re-invent the (spinning ;)) wheel.

See this comment for example from Al

"Hi Mary. I see we are talking about different things. I think you want me to do what I call endurance runs in the various conditions. I just don't have time, and I need a better hypothesis than " OU means it will run forever" to test. Now that I have a reasonable prediction of how long it SHOULD run IF it has 17000 Joules available, that is something I can reasonably test. Let's see--40 hours per test, times say 3-5 runs to get a reasonable mean, times the 4 conditions you mention. That comes to, let's see--800 hours, or 10 weeks of fulltime work.

I'll get right on it. "

Tests/information I would love to see (but am not in a position to build my own rig)...

Footage of rig with load (Al has reported he has done some tests with a model airplane prop which lowered the RPM's but did not change the rundown times) I'd dearly love to see this in a replication with supporting photo's/video.

Endurance run - How long will the thing run until it stops? (AL used Tach readings over a short period and reported them to the forum, until to fiddled with one of the stators and the drive stator fell "out of synch"). This would be ideal - especially with webcam or time lapse photography.

What other tests would people like to see on the rigs?

Dyamios

I think it would be fun to test the potential electrical output.

A simple coil connected to a diode-bridge and smoothing capacitor would probably be sufficient to light an LED, given the voltage is high enough.

Same kinda test as with a load though... just with shiny lights  :P

Hi again Jag! :)

I've been

I've been following the Steron threads about Whip Magnet  PMM AKA OCAL PMM,

I'm in the process of getting pricing from local (to me) vendor for machined parts (a la Sean) to replicate the OCAL PMM... My vendor is Small Parts Manufacturing. in Portland Oregon,   if there is anyone else on the forums interested in also getting the the basic bones for their own replication. There might be some economy in a batch order...

If anyone's interested please drop me a note.

Thanks

Geodan

Garsh darn, someone actually "local" to the PDX?  May have to hang out for a week and see if I still have a job left.  Keep me in mind tho

Hey Geodan, sent you a pm, I'm interested, even if it is just two of us and we go half.

I have the magnets, since yesterday, just need some fabricated parts!
