Let me add a little bit more info...

I'm thinking that if you were to use spherical electrodes, a smaller globe inside a larger one. The smaller one being the negative or hydrogen producing electrode. Would this make the reaction more efficient since a sphere would have less current leakage than tubes or plates? Also would need to allow a hole at the top and bottom for water to flow through the unit and current connection to the inside globe.
