my bedini coil sings ... is this normal?

the coil i use in my bedini SSG "sings" ... anybody else noticed this?

by singing, i mean i can make it produce what sounds like 5-15kHz sine wave and vary the amplitude and frequency by tweaking some things

i can also get the same results i was getting with the magnetic spinning rotor... without it

so I've come to the conclusion that I've either done something wrong... or I've accidentally done something other than the bedini SSG i was trying to build

only difference in my circuit is i used a 5k variable pot instead of a 1k

my coil is a little different too. i used 22 and 30 gauge instead of what the schematic called for. i also have no clue how many windings i put on it :)

i also used neo magnets instead of the ceramics i was supposed to use for the rotor

all the variances are simply because i was just using the materials i already had available and didn't have extra funds to purchase everything to spec

....

soooo, my bedini motor kinda works

it spins. there's more voltage on the charging batteries than the primary. all that good stuff.

the only problem is that over the several weeks I've been testing it, the batteries I've been using have all lost about 1v of standing voltage

i figured this was mostly due to not having my variable resistor set at the right amount.

so i decided to tinker around with it some more today.

first i took the iron welding rods core out.

i did this because even though it does produce a stronger electro magnet, I've noticed it also produces drag once the magnets pass the center

after i took the core out i noticed that the little noise i was hearing before was comming from the center of the coil

i also learned that i can change the frequency of the tone by changing the variable resistor

the more resistance the higher the pitch

there is a point though when lowering the resistance that the pitch will briefly rise before the optional 25ma bulb switches on and the pitch drops dramatically

i can also lower the pitch by moving a piece of welding rod through the center of the coil

i can change the amplitude pretty drastically by putting the neo magnets inside the coil

i can also dramatically  increase both the pitch and amplitude by disconnecting one of the gator clips to the charging battery (which also turns on the neon bulb like it's suppose to).

once i get the coil singing,  by either swiping a magnet past it or touching any pair of the four wire ends coming out of it together, it will continue to sing until i disconnect the primary battery.

but i can get it to start again by just reconnecting the primary battery (although it doesn't restart 100% of the time).

and when the coil is singing, even without the rotor, i get the same charging effects that i get with the rotor.

soooo, can somebody please elaborate on what i possibly did wrong... or what's causing the coil to sing?

you have made a self oscillating sg.

you dont really 'need' the rotor as you discovered.

I am looking to build an SG and have done some reading. I am confused about the singing coils. The coil should pulse only when the magnetic properties of the coil are reversed and not at any other time. For the coil to sing the system may be oscillating on its own. If you have one magnet and your RPM is in the hundreds all you would hear is a low hum if anything.

To make this clear for me, how fast is your rotor turning and how many magnets are you using.
Are you saying that your coils singing without the rotor turning? (That might be a problem)

If you are getting 5khz and the Bedini is pulsing only one time each time the magnet crosses and you have only one magnet you spinning at 5000 RPM.

correct, it is oscillating on its own.
the rotor is usually not spinning when this occurs. you can in fact build a version without a rotor.

There is one schamatic there on that link. It does not include the battery in the tank circuit so it is not an SG or even a Bedini I think. I have seen references to a Bedini that does not use a rotor, but the SG always uses a rotor correct?

The other thing about the no rotor setup is what a guy on that page says. He says that the rotor version adapts to the battery state but the solid state one does not.
