Designing artificial cells to harness the biological ion concentration gradient : Abstract : Nature Nanotechnology

It seems natural to ask if artificial cells can be built to use ion transport as effectively as natural cells. Here we report a mathematical calculation of the conversion of ion concentration gradients into action potentials across different nanoscale conductors in a model electrogenic cell (electrocyte) of an electric eel. Using the parameters extracted from the numerical model, we designed an artificial cell based on an optimized selection of conductors. The resulting cell is similar to the electrocyte but has higher power output density and greater energy conversion efficiency. We suggest methods for producing these artificial cells that could potentially be used to power medical implants and other tiny devices.

Electrophorus electricus has got three of them. These unique organs are made of electroplates which are located in rows. These electroplates are serial connected which means that even a small electrical output may be increased several times because these electric outputs are summed. Consequently, at the end the electric output is strong enough to kill a small fish or to make an injury to a human being. By causing this electric shock the electric eels get their food.
Despite all of that these electric organs have another function as well. They also emit electric pulses. On the eel’s skin there are a number of electric sensors which are able to detect these signals back. This is the way how the electric eels orientate themselves in the water and also communicate between one another. The dominant male eel emits the loudest, the noisiest and the most frequent signals whereas the female eels emit short lasting signals. These electric features were firstly studied by C.W. Coated of the New York Aquarium in 1920s. However the first report about this fascinating animal was made by a Frenchman J. Richter in 1729.

E. electricus have very little economic value to humans. Occasionally they are eaten by locals of the Amazon area; however they are commonly avoided due to the electrical shocks that can be given out up to eight hours after death. Although there is no commercial value, the electric eel has been a constant source of study for many years.

Models of eel cells suggest electrifying possibilities

. The mechanism is similar to nerve cells. The arrival of a chemical signal triggers the opening of highly selective channels in a cell membrane causing sodium ions to flow in and potassium ions to flow out. The ion swap increases the voltage across the membrane, which causes even more channels to open. Past a certain point the process becomes self-perpetuating, resulting in an electric pulse traveling through the cell. The channels then close and alternate paths open to “pump” the ions back to their initial concentrations during a “resting” state.

In all, according LaVan, there are at least seven different types of channels, each with several possible variables to tweak, such as their density in the membrane. Nerve cells, which move information rather than energy, can fire rapidly but with relatively little power. Electrocytes have a slower cycle, but deliver more power for longer periods. LaVan and partner Jian Xu developed a complex numerical model to represent the conversion of ion concentrations to electrical impulses and tested it against previously published data on electrocytes and nerve cells to verify its accuracy. Then they considered how to optimize the system to maximize power output by changing the overall mix of channel types.

Their calculations show that substantial improvements are possible. One design for an artificial cell generates more than 40 percent more energy in a single pulse than a natural electrocyte.

Each cell produces 0.15 Volt, if there are 200 000 cells we can see how far off the 500 Volt is. It's more like 30 000 volt. This is without the 40% improvement.

Wackypedia suggests (lies) the eel can generate more than one pulse per hour. The video at the top post suggests it produces as much as 800 Watt quit and makes power most of the time. This is documented to be his navigation system and his agent for electronic dating.
