Before some years i used to experiment with metal detectors. If an EM wave hits copper and iron the same time, both of them create a 180 degrees difference response. Someone had used this characteristic and made a patent of an electromagnet that could attract copper instead of iron. The working principle is to induce eddy current by the input AC current in a non ferromagnetic metal first, then the field of the eddy currents are able to induce other eddy current in an also non ferromagnetic metal object and this latter induction will already be attractive.

So basically this is a lossy process, as you can read the last sentence at rex   http://www.rexresearch.com/mrmagnet/mrmagnet.htm :

"A final word of caution: the washers carry considerable current through them and get quite hot. Connect the magnets only when necessary."
