This is probably worth reading over a few times to grasp fully.

It's also worth mentioning on Tesla's diagram:
Primary and Secondary are wound in different directions.   (Primary wound CW, secondary wound CCW)

The layout even resembles Akula's deconstructed coil.

Look at this schematic the pnp switch is switching the pos rail into the inductor notice the freewheel diode coming off the rail its passing neg current through the diode.
The switch is pulsing the inductor with pos energy the bemf is neg.

If the switch and inductor were on the neg rail the bemf would be pos.
