Around 1981 (I was 15) at around 10:00 pm - my mom, my brothers, and I were driving home when we saw two lights moving in the sky.  We noticed them because one was rapidly approaching the other.  I say this because one was moving slowly... and the other was moving very fast towards it.
As the faster light approached it, the slower one started moving in a different direction, which turned out to be a very fast descent.  At some point, we had pulled over onto the shoulder of the road... and the 'object' ended up descending to 20 metres or so above the power lines that were on the side of the road - and it was more or less right above us.
I got a good view of the bottom of the craft.  It was triangular in shape and there was a bright white light coming from each corner.  There were no blue/white headlights in '81... but it reminded me of a MH street light at the time.
The bottom was sort of 'egg crate' shaped.  There was also a source of yellowish light... and with all the light, I could only make out part of the bottom of the craft... and I can't swear to the shape of the vehicle in the verticle space above the base... but my impression at the time was that it was sort of pyramid-like... the sides were tall and slanted towards the top.  Of course, I have no idea if it was flat on top or pointed or whatever.
There was no sound.  The vehicle came down - slowly rotating as it slowed it's descent and then immediately started ascending again.
Of course - I thought it was an alien craft and tried to get out of the car to flag it down.
My mom, of course, locked the door and held me by the hair until she could get the car started and drive off.
I tried to watch it in the sky has it moved away.  We were only a mile from the house... but I lost sight odf it with all the trees on the winding country road.

Looking back - the other craft was probably a military jet sent to intercept the craft I saw.  I say this because it was moving faster than a civilian jet, and when the other craft dropped out of the sky, the other light kept basically the same heading and began to slow down.  Of course when the triangular craft came low enough to see what it was... I lost track of the jet.

I remember seeing one craft, a typical saucer type with the same type of a white/yellowish light on the bottom.  The ring where the light was seen had about a 3" or so lip and the ring was about 6' across.  The craft was roughly 12'-14' and so close I couldn't see all of it through my sliding glass door.  It hovered about 3' off the ground but took off when I started walking toward it.  I guess at the closest point I was 10' away.

The craft I saw was only about 6-8 metres on each side - I forgot to add that.

I wonder why these craft come so close to 'people' - I know in my case, there were a coupl,e of cars that passed by while the craft was coming down... and there were acres of farm to either side of us where they could have landed and had a party all night without being seen.

So do you think it was an alien craft? 

I think the odds are better that it was a human built machine... but obvioulsy built and piloted by someone from a group of people who are outside our society.
There are rumors that Marconi and others fled the facists to protect their lives and their awesome technology from becoming a weapon.

I can't say about any other craft, but I saw what was the probable occupant of the craft about two weeks earlier.  Your typical grey outline except you could see through it like smokey glass.

I'm curious to know the circumstances behind your seeing the alien.
