My guess is that the magnetic motor had problems or just too little torque.  If you look at the patent, the magnet motor had a small pulley, and the alternator had a large pulley on it.  This says that the motor had a lack of power in my book. 

Using that design, at least 1/3 of all the magnets will work against you at any given point in time.  I think that it was also very expensive to build.
