I couldn't wait and I made a replication. For me, the ring is rotating as well. But I show on the video that rotating is also achieved when holding the ring over a maget alone.
When I move the rope with the ring, after it rotated, it rotates back. And when I replaced the rope with a fishing rope, there was no rotation. Seems that twisted rope gets untwisted, when under pressure. See the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbUc7qFnHDw
