I don´t think so. Just very efficient capilliary action. The article states:

molecular attractions and evaporation combine to move a liquid against gravity

So it sounds exactly the same as water wicking up a string, just faster. You still need to mantain a potential by having the top dry out though otherwise it will just saturate and stop wicking up.
