Considering Don Smith videos I think even iron would be superfluous. It is here to make magnetic flux move to the output coil location.
In fact the effect is generated inside iron core in such embodiment while it's possible to make it happen in copper or iron  coils directly.It's just the collapse of magnetic field inflated abruptly by HV discharge of EXACTLY synchronized unidirectional IMPULSE.When it collapse ambient background fill the gap with inertia causing magnetic field flux.
I know that it all sounds like garbage    I'm pretty sure now it's only dependent on synchronization and method of pulsing not on various mystical transformer designs.Really!

Good observation.  The edges on most ferrite toroids are broken with a 45 degree angle flat.  Also, note that the porosity of this material does not appear to be up to the standards of high purity ferrite, which has a very fine grain structure allowing a very smooth/polished surface.  The photo appears to show a crude form of material such as you might see used in a cheap ceramic magnet.  I have no idea why a magnet would be useful here.  Possibly, that is the only ferrite material he had access to and, just maybe, he heated them to above the curie temp. so they are no longer magnets?

I have no idea.
