Ina normal flux compressor the tube explodes but that is a weapon. In others I have read how the center tube (shorting bar) shorts the coil causing the coil to compress a short pulse of current. I suppose if the ground wire runs through the center where the flux is most concentrated you can move a bunch of current for a small cost.
