That's a standard abbreviation for "electromagnetic".

A cored transformer experiences two interactions between its windings - an electromagnetic one (Faraday/Maxwell, Lenz) and acoustic one (MS and Villari).

If two coils are tightly coupled by mutual inductance at a short distance then EM propagation delays will not be sufficient to cause a 90º phase shift at low frequencies.  However external capacitive components can cause the currents in the windings to be 90º out of phase when cos(phi)=0 (all wattless power). In that case these capacitive components will take and give back the same energy in one cycle (minus engineering losses).

I don't know of any material that would slow down the mutual inductance between two closely coupled coils to such degree that its propagation delay causes significant phase shifts.

     Another interesting thing Tesla demonstrated  (early on in his development of resonant electrical circuits) is a transmission line whose termination is shorted.    Again constructive wave interference develops.  His hairpin demonstrations clearly show current flowing through loads connected to various nodes developed on the transmission line.  Constructive wave interference, on an acoustic level, allows for amplification of a signal.   A large amount of waves from the input are caused to constructively interfere and the summing of the waves results in amplification of the signal.  But what happens to the input signal when the incident wave and the reflected wave destructively interfere?  We know we are putting energy in and nothing is coming out.  I resort to Einstein's famous equivalency equation and solve for M.   Mass equals E/c squared.  What is happening is you are converting photons (the quantified unit of energy)  into mass. From consideration of the aforementioned logic dictates that: all massive things can be converted into energy, as all mass is made of energy.
  Some of the more massive objects  (supposedly where the gravitational "pull"is so great that it sucks in light) are simply photon resevoirs.  Light incident upon the dark object is converted into mass.  The bending of light rays is another Einstein marvel.  These photon resevoirs allow astrophysicists to see stars behind the blackholes.  This phenomenon is attributed to a property of mass to alter spacetime.  The photons are time and space fluctuations.  Since time and space are not constants; but altered by mass; the light radiations from the stars (which should be assimilated into the blackhole or shadowed)  simply propogate through altered space and time.  The frequency and wavelength of a wave in gravitational field A is not the same as the frequency and wavelength in gravitational field b.  The amount of energy carried by the wave is constant but the field through which the wave propogates is not.  A wave with a 1/4 wavelength assigned a constant parameter of the wave finds that a meter near a blackhole is not a meter further away from a blackhole.  Even more counterintuative is the realization that a second near a blackhole is not the same as a second further from the blackhole.  Weird but scientifically verified over and over again.  A photon enters gravitational field a.  It propogates through the bent space and emerges apparently altered in the direction of propogation,   
or refracted.  If the bent spacetime field is really warped,  the incident photon may emerge from the field and interfere with photons of the same frequency and wavelength radiated by the original photon emitter.  This increases the mass of the blackhole as now you have destructive wave interference adding to it's mass.   Take this phenomenon down to the scale of an atom.  Same shit just smaller lighter and faster.  The good thing about increase in mass of a blackhole is that as you increase it's mass you alter the spacetime warp it is responsible for.  Incident photons that were adding to it's mass, due to destructive wave interference from light sources,  now traverse the "new" gravitational field and emerge at different degrees of refraction.  This limits the growth of the blackhole.  I would expand this theory to objects like the Earth.  Lets put a blackhole down in the core.  This creates a peculiar spacetime warp.  We then attribute all physical constants and parameters in terms of how things are in this "peculiar" gravitational field.  Now we say the Sun is 92million miles away and it takes light 8 seconds to get here.  Which kind of 8 seconds.  The 8 seconds near the solar corona or the 8 seconds in the ort belt.  Which kind of mile?  The mile around Jupiter's equator or the mile between an electron and a neucleus.

And what do you think about obtaining energy from nothing,  vacuum or "the ambient" such as the Maxwell's demon?
In other words, without converting massive protons, neutrons, electrons, etc... into energy.
