Free Energy will change the World - Free Energy will stop Climate Change - Free Energy will give us hope
and we will not surrender until free energy will be enabled all over the world, to power planes, cars, ships and trains.
Free energy will help the poor to become independent of needing expensive fuels.
So all in all Free energy will bring far more peace to the world than any other invention has already brought to the world.

Underground greenhouses http://peswiki.com/index.php/Directory:Walipini_Underground_Greenhouses   triffid
Concerning the 'underground' aspect greenhouses, a bomb shelter might be a good idea.

Japanese TV reporters got to within 1 mile of Fukushima and the radiation was too heavy to continue closer.  People are suggested to evacuate further away from the reactors.  I wonder why?  Sarcasm!?!?   >:(   :o   ::)    This disaster is getting so bad, it's poisoning the Japanese landscape!
UPDATE:
The Japanese Govt upgraded the severity of the Fukushima disaster to that being equal to Chernobyl.  And there's a lot more fuel available to melt at Fukushima.

I'm merely a theoretical electronics engineer/technician for now, since I have no extra money for experimentation, but I was a professional electronics/computer technician in the past.
As a result, I have a lot of ideas, but no hard test results to back them up---for now.  That could change if I get a job locally in the Bay Area of California.

Gas is at $3.89/gal where I am at here in st.Louis,mo. The media is devoting tons of coverage to the higher gas prices. What they should devote coverage to is our lack of planning for them. How people should go back to living their lives in a five mile radius from their homes. You go to school,Live your whole life and die within a 5 mile radius from the home you live in.Thats walking distance for most people.triffid

And you don't live in Calif. like me.  It approaching $5.00/gal in some places---Southern Calif., for one.  San Francisco is high enough.  The prices will continue rising through the summer, analysts say.
So, you have a point for MO, but I imagine the East Coast is in a similar situation.

Most people are smarter than average on this forum; that's why they're here.  They converse with more intelligent people like themselves.  The average American may or may not think of being proactive in terms of money-saving tactics like living closer to work until they have harsh reality shoved down their throats---and then they'll be pissed off about it.  "Par for the course", as the adage goes.

Well, maybe almost.  That's a double positive (bold letters), like an oxymoron in reverse, right?  :o   ::)

Seriously, there might be a problem overhead with your house, since it's not made of steel and is made of wood?  Is it like an apartment house or condo made of concrete and rebar with a steel frame?

Otherwise, you might have to go through the trouble of pouring more concrete, thus thickening the floor against heavy radiation after taking a concrete saw to cut a man-sized opening in the floor.  Can these saws be rented?

Then, dig a sub-basement that's more insulated from radiation with the additional concrete overhead.  You might get by with many! sandbags over the sub-basement instead of pouring more expensive concrete.  Or you can be safer and do both.  Store your cans/bottles, medicine, blankets&beds/cots, guns/ammo, etc., etc. down there until you need them.

Concrete blocks to build a small room would be a good idea. You really need to worry only about gamma rays.About 2-3 inches of aluminum would take care of most of it.A sheet of newpaper stops most beta rays.Aluminum foil stops most alpha particles so you are left with gamma.triffid
