Gov't 'C' Rations come with their own heating means in the form of a salt water bag that you cut and pour the contents into a special container.  The salt water reacts with the content(s)---whatever it/they  is/are,  and the meal heats up without smoke or visible flame.  But, I think the thing gives off something like ammonia or such.  Use in a ventilated area, like outside or in a cave/tent entrance.
