I am kind of on both sides of this smot business (works? doesn't work?)..... the wiki page explaining why a smot would never generate more power than it started with kind of makes sense.... but at the same time I feel that you can> my head hurts lol..

Magnets aren't quite intuitive.  The simple SMOT ramp works by fooling you about potential energies.  We're used to thinking of going uphill as taking energy, except that with a SMOT ramp, there is a magnetic hill encouraging the ball to go up.  Simply put, the ball in its initial position at the bottom of a SMOT ramp has higher potential energy than the ball at the top of the ramp.

Lots of people want to use magnets, more magnets, or clever bits of metal to get free lunch.  But simply passing through the field of a magnet, in one side and out the other, is a zero sum thing.  Putting a metal plate in to 'block' half of the field simply makes the change in the field more dramatic.  If you doubt this, look at all the people who have failed to link any number of chained SMOT devices with a ramp going back to the beginning - if it generates any energy, the only failure mode will be the ball flying off the track!  If the ball stops, that's because friction has overcome kinetic energy and stuck it at low potential.
