Just a few things I've tried:

Filled two lengths of aquarium tubing with ferro-fluid, one about 3" in diameter (once sealed in a loop), and another around 7" in diameter.

I've only pulsed the smaller, wrapped with 30 turns of #26 magnet wire against a 12V battery.  I did not see any effect at any point, it did not affect my compass in any way, there was no indication that anything was out of the ordinary.  I hit it with all durations and polarities of pulses trying to get something tangible to observe.

Also, earlier I had said that I cut up some ferrite toroids to see if I could link them in PMH fashion, and failed.  Yesterday however, I took a flat piece of steel and one half of a toroid I had split, I sanded the toroid flat at the cut locations, and it links to the steel very easily and strongly (wrapped the half ferrite toroid with about 15 turns of the above wire).  Interesting is that when I remove the ferrite from the bar, neither piece has any residual magnetization that I can tell.  The ferrite that is expected, but I figured that the steel would have some reminence (that's the right use of the word right?).

Also when linked I was sliding it down the bar, and it would remain stuck for a bit, but after crossing a certain threshold it would detach.  So it seems like the magnetization of the steel is only in the location in which I linked it, and doesn't follow it as it moves.  This is a sketchy observation and I'll be more thorough next time to confirm that.

I owe some videos, I've been lazy about it, mostly because nothing has seemed exciting enough to bother recording.

i think you may need a thicker wire, or a LOT more turns of that thin stuff.

But just so we're on the same page,
slide your coil off of the tube, and test it with the compass
to see the magnetic field you are making.

wether or not you can achieve a constant magnetic current through a fluid has not been determined, but at the very least you should have some activity within the fluid while the current is turned "on" from the battery.

The compass most definitely jumps around when it gets pulsed, but once the pulse ends it settles back to north.  There was one thing I thought interesting in this regard (which may be completely normal), that's if the compass is resting above the loop which is laying on the table, north always jumps toward one side consistently.  If I raise the loop up so its above the compass instead, it always jumps the opposite direction.  I found that a little confusing since given its a ferrous loop core I thought 1) the field should be contained within the fluid, and 2)  see point one, no really I just realized I didnt have another point

Anyway given that fact I was having, err am still having trouble visualizing what kind of field the pulse is creating to cause that.

Back to pulsing things!
