Hey my device wouldn't lock either.  But this is due to surfaces not mating close enough.  Just build the aluminum ring with oxide.   Or mate the surface better.

Dave - thanks for this.  But I really couldn't see the 'effect' that I did see before.  I wonder if it wouldn't help if you kept the ring steady?  I think the actual problem here is that my focus is very bad and by the time I focus in the ring has moved again.  But that's just me.  I'm not sure how everyone else is seeing it. 

But many thanks for all your input.  This is indeed an interesting subject.
